The core component in XBRL is the taxonomy which is an agreed and structured list of reporting elements. Taxonomies are being published by the beneficiaries of the required information: by regulators for financial statements (i.e. US-GAAP), by tax authorities for tax filings, by industry organizations and statistics bureaus for industry information, and by companies for internal use.
An XBRL instance document is used to contain actual facts. The facts, texts and figures, are ‘tagged’ with references to elements in a taxonomy. The instance document also contains the ‘contexts’, such as the year and the currency used. The tags and the contexts define the meaning of a fact indisputably and enable automatic processing of the document.
An XBRL instance document can be represented digitally using a so called style sheet. The style sheet defines the formatting and layout, and is tailored to meet corporate and personal requirements. The instance document can also be imported directly into a system for further processing or analysis. |
